Japan takes in 20 Ukrainian refugees in high-profile flight to showcase support for Ukraine

Japan offered an unusually warm welcome to 20 Ukrainian refugees as they arrived in the country on board a special government flight on April 5, 2022. The Ukranians, ranging in age from 6 to 66 years old, are expected to stay in the Asian country for at least six months, and will be provided with further support as needed, according to Japanese officials. They will join about 400 other refugees already in the country, and will get 90-day visas which can be converted to a one-year working visa. The world’s third-largest economy, Japan has long been wary of foreign migrants, only accepting 47 refugees and admitting 44 others “for humanitarian reasons” in 2020.
