North Korean authorities have intensified a national crackdown on what they describe as “puppet language” – or Korean as spoken in the South. North Koreans caught using slang or vocabulary from south of the border face sentences that may include hard labour in a prison camp or even death under the Pyongyang Cultural Language Protection Act.
