China named Wang Yi to replace Qin Gang as foreign minister in an abrupt announcement on July 25, 2023. The removal of Qin followed his month-long absence, which had fuelled intense speculation. The sudden removal was approved by China’s top legislature, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, during a special session.
