Calls to shut down zoos in Pakistan have grown after the death of a 17-year-old elephant at the Karachi Zoo on April 22, 2023. Noor Jehan was critically-ill when she fell into a pond, after which she was unable to stand without help. The zoo has been criticised for not being equipped to look after elephants. Authorities said they are considering shutting down the Karachi Zoo permanently amid widespread public criticism of the facility.
