Local scientists warn that Hong Kong will suffer from extreme weather that can overwhelm infrastructure, if the world fails to keep temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius. The warning is in response to a “code red for humanity” issued by the United Nations as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) released its sixth assessment report examining the physical science of climate change. A previous report in 2013 prompted governments to renew commitments under the 2016 Paris Agreement to limit warming to well within 2 degrees, including Hong Kong, which set a target to become carbon neutral by 2050. Local environmental experts say one way for the city to achieve that is by shifting investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
