Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor announced a raft of fresh Covid-19 restrictions on January 5, 2022, as the city rushed to curb the spread of several Omicron variant clusters. The latest measures include reinstating a 6pm curfew on in-person dining, closing bars, clubs and karaoke establishments, as well as beaches and sports clubs. Hong Kong also imposed a two-week ban on all passenger flights from eight countries, including the US, UK and Australia. The measures are aimed at warding off a fifth wave of coronavirus infections after several cases emerged that have been linked to Cathay Pacific employees who broke isolation rules to dine in city restaurants and bars.
