March 11, 2023, marks the 12th anniversary of Japan’s powerful earthquake and resulting tsunami that killed 18,000 people and triggered the worst nuclear crisis since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Today, the country is still dealing with the fallout, namely how to treat and dispose of the contaminated groundwater, which is quickly accumulating. Starting in late 2023, treated water will be released into the ocean, a decision facing backlash domestically and around the world.
