The blockbuster film Oppenheimer, about the American physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who led efforts to create the atomic bomb, has sparked debate in Japan. The film opened worldwide in July 2023, except in Japan, where there is yet to be a scheduled release date. As the only country that has experienced nuclear-weapon attacks, the Japanese people have expressed feelings about the film. August 6 and 9 will mark 78 years since two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
