The state of Qatar has said it has “nothing to apologise for” in hosting the 2022 men’s football World Cup, amid controversy over the country’s human rights record.
The country has strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws and there are concerns over the treatment of those working on infrastructure projects for the tournament.
Hassan Al-Thawadi, the general secretary of the Qatar 2022 tournament, told the BBC that criticism by some players and managers has been “ill-informed”.
The draw for November’s tournament takes place on 1 April.
