Rishi Sunak will be the UK’s next prime minister after he came out on top of the Conservative leadership race.
The former chancellor had previously stood for the leadership against Liz Truss after Boris Johnson resigned as PM in July. He will now take on the role, following Truss’s resignation 45 days into the job.
Mr Sunak had said he was standing as PM to fix a “profound economic crisis” as well as unite his party.
Since 2015, Mr Sunak has been the Conservative MP for Richmond in Yorkshire. He was promoted to chancellor in February 2020 and within weeks found himself having to steer the UK economy during the Covid pandemic.
