South Korean investigators failed to detain impeached president Yoon Suk-yeol after a nearly six-hour stand-off with the presidential security service on January 3, 2025. It was the latest saga in a political crisis that has paralysed the country’s government. The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which is probing Yoon’s short-lived declaration of martial law, said it withdrew its investigators out of concern for the safety of its members after they were blocked from entering Yoon’s official residence.
