Ahead of South Korea’s 2024 parliamentary elections, a ban forbidding voters from bringing spring onions to polling stations was announced amid political discontent towards conservative president Yoon Suk-yeol. Economic woes, including surging vegetable prices, have taken centre stage, exacerbated by allegations surrounding the first lady’s receipt of a Dior handbag and a prolonged doctors’ strike. With a record-breaking turnout during early voting, Yoon’s ruling People Power Party faces an uphill battle, with the risk of impeachment if the opposition wins 200 seats or more.
